Minor Procedures

Minor ophthalmic procedures include:

Eyeball - some changes require a surgical intervention:

pterygium - it is a conjunctival degeneration that resembles an insect's wing – hence its name.
The pathologically changed conjunctiva proliferates, in the form of a wedge, onto the cornea. If the growth rate is high, it may happen that the tip of the wing enters the axis of vision and impairs the visual acuity. This is why the change should be operated as early as possible. The disease is most frequent among people who work outdoor in a strong sunlight.
Pigmentation changes – clusters of pigmentation cells (melanocytes) located on the eyeball. Normally, they are stable and not dangerous. However, if you notice the changes to be growing, it is advisable to remove them.
degeneration changes of conjunctiva - e.g. pingueculum. An age-related change, most often located at the cornea "at 3 and 9 o'clock".

Eyelids

Cosmetic changes:

yellow patchesxantelasma – clusters of cholesterol, most commonly located near the inner canthus of the upper or lower eyelid. It is a minor cosmetic change.
Warts - variously sized pathological skin changes, most often caused by viros infection.
chalazion – a pathological change caused by inflammation of the Meibomian gland. It is normally of the size of a grain of hale. It is located intradermally on the upper or lower eyelid.

Incorrect eyelid position:

entropion – a condition when eyelids fold inward. Normally, it is old age-related, possibly caused by cicatrisation. It makes the eyelashes irritate the cornea thus causing its permanent damage. In such cases, entropion should be operated.
ectropion - an outward turning of the eyelid. Normally, it is old age-related or caused by facial nerve paralysis. It causes persistent lacrimation and may lead to corneal complications and chronic inflammation of conjunctiva.

Other procedures on eyelids:

wedge resection of eyelid – normally used for cancerous processes taking up the while thickness of the eyelid.
temporary or permanent shortening of the eyelid gap - performed when it is necessary for therapeutic purposes.
Upon removal, the changes are examined in the histopathology lab.
