Keratoconus

Description of the disease

Keratoconus (from Greek: kerato- cornea and konos- cone) is a disease which distorts the shape of the cornea. Resembling the shape of a cone, the distortion significantly impairs vision ability.
Symptoms you can observe:
- blurred, distorted vision
- the so-called sudden hydropia – overclouding of the field of vision that may persist for up to a few weeks.
- in an advanced stage of the disease: significant vision impairment.

KeratoconusKeratoconus grows, but usually very slowly. It may also stop at any stage: both moderate and serious. When the disease progresses, the cornea gets bulged more and more. Thus the cornea gets thinner and thinner while also becoming irregular and sometimes scarred.

Keratoconus affects several thousands of people in Poland. There no statistics, but it is estimated that the number may be between 7,000 and 20,000 people. No detailed about causes of keratoconus are known either. However, there are several theories regarding the etiology of this disease - it is mainly about genetic grounds, degenerative disorders, but there are also theories saying that keratoconus is a result of a certain disease process or endocrinologic system disorders). Scientific research has shown that seven per cent of patients revealed a keratoconus history also in their families. However, if you develop keratoconus as the first one, then your child is likely to develop it like 1:10.
